A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Security Action on Gangs
At least 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.
Government representatives said at least 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Locals have likened the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.
Rio's police reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.

Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
