A Simple Declaration or Merely Out of Touch? The Hue Named 'Cloud Dancer' Named Pantone's Color for 2026.

Hi there! I'm so eager to discover what color has been chosen for 2026. Tell me everything!

Prepare yourself, because every year beginning in 1999, Pantone chooses a Color of the Year. This choice seeks to represent the spirit of the times—shaping everything from how we feel and what we wear to interior styling. 2025's selection was the rich tan "Mocha Mousse," following the soft and warm "a fuzzy pastel."

The latest choice, however, is particularly baffling. It is "an airy shade," labeled as a "soft and structural white."

Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "an essential foundational hue … allowing all colors to be highlighted."

Interesting, Cloud Dancer… hold on, just white? Is this a prank? Does white qualify as a distinct hue?

What is the best way to define the hue of a cloud? A blank page? While some consider white as a color, the entire spectrum is essentially a range of visible light. It's present in a set of colored pencils, so for practical purposes the answer is yes.

If Pantone is being provocative is more difficult to ascertain. According to their release, Cloud Dancer pairs effortlessly with other colors, avoids sensory overload, embodies understated style, and projects quiet sophistication.

Responses from critics, on the other hand, has not been as kind. Several voices have suggested Pantone of being completely "Pantonedeaf." Fashion and trend forecaster Mandy Lee called it "underwhelming." Some have even compared it with implied endorsement of certain ideologies seen in recent advertising.

Okay, it's to be hoped they're blissfully unaware that the timing is awkward to be pointedly celebrating pure white... Anyway, how might someone not exactly adjacent to a runway incorporate this news in everyday routine? I just painted my kitchen ceiling white, does that count?

That definitely qualifies. So would your earbuds, sink, or favorite mug.

The timing is curious you mention runways, as many this season's presentations have been bold and fuzzy, featuring eco-friendly materials on the catwalk.

All-white outfits were present, as always, in designer collections—from structured tops to collared dresses. Well-known individuals have also been spotted in crisp all-white ensembles at prestigious shows.

On the bright side is: chances are you already possess pieces in this "subtle" color of the year. In the words of Pressman, Cloud Dancer "embodies a eco-friendlier decision for the environmentally aware," which could mean not having to buy anything new at all.

SO, a style movement for the truly minimalist. An empty canvas, in a manner of speaking. A haven of calming neutrality amid the chaos. Okay, I'm on board. Are you planning a monochrome palette for your wardrobe?

Definitely not. Have you ever tried to clean grass stains from a white shirt? I could do without extra stain-removal drama in 2026.

I do own a pair of now off-white sandals, and those never go out of style.
