Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate following their development".
The prominent academic, who once led the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public messages demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it accepted his determination to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the Board," OpenAI remarked.
Political Context
This development follows after the two houses of Congress agreed on Tuesday to approve a bill that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will afterward head to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he plans to approve the bill, after changing his stance on the subject following pushback from his base.

A batch of financier-linked correspondence released by the legislative panel days ago mentioned several prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The communications revealed that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the official to prominent global figures.
Personal Response
After the messages were made available with the public, the former official said he took "complete accountability for my poor decision to continue communicating with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to restore faith and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor occupied leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He headed the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties recently on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in Washington where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be associated with the institution.
He entered the board of the AI company, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO the company leader.
