Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
