Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
